hC. Keith Hagen wrote an article about the recent success of the Hawaiian language in the state. And apparently, mispronunciations still abound.

Full story.

SAIVUS

Recently, I learned about a site called SAIVUS (Society to Advance Indigenous Vernaculars of the US) that intends to be a resource of learning materials for Native American languages. At the time of writing, there is a lesson each for Hawaiian and Lakota, mostly info on pronunciation. I look forward to seeing how this project progresses!

Google goes Hawaiian

Google has added a Hawaiian version to its lists of translated search interfaces. This does not seem to apply to Google Mail.

Full story here.

As far as I can tell, this is the first indigenous language of the US available so far. There are indigenous languages in the Americas with far more speakers than Hawaiian so hopefully it’s just a matter of time before more translations are completed.
